How to Clean and Maintain Pendant Lighting Fixtures

Pendant lights are the perfect addition to any home. However, even perfection can get a little bit dusty and dirty over time.

At The Pendant Lighting Company, we recognise that cleaning might not be everyone’s favourite household task, but it’s worth it to keep your pendant lights looking their best.

In this article, we’ll give you a step-by-step guide on how to clean glass pendant lights a weekly quick clean and a deeper clean. To make sure your pendant lights shine brighter, are more energy-efficient, and last longer.

A ‘Light’ Clean for Your Pendant Lights

A light clean is a quick and easy option that should only take a few minutes. It’s something you should do almost weekly to keep your pendant lights in great shape.

Step One

Before you do anything, turn off the power supply to the pendant light. If you have an electrical tester, you can double-check that there is no power running to the light. If the tester beeps or flashes, that means the electricity is still flowing.

Step Two

Once the bulb has cooled down, put on a pair of gloves (to protect your hands and avoid leaving fingerprints on the fixture), grab a step ladder, a duster (preferably an extendable one), or a dry microfibre cloth. Now carefully wipe the glass of your pendant light to remove any dust or dirt.

Don’t forget to wipe the light bulb as well! A dirty bulb not only looks unpleasant but can also reduce energy efficiency, so make sure to give it a gentle wipe as well.

A Deeper Clean for Your Pendant Lights

While a light clean keeps things looking fresh, it’s a good idea to give your pendant lights a deeper clean every four to six months to really make sure you increase their longevity. So, here is the best way to clean glass pendant lights.

Step One

Just as with the light clean, make sure you turn off the power supply and wait for the bulb to cool down.

Step Two

Dismantle your pendant light! How to do this will depend on your specific fixture, but in most cases, you’ll need to remove the bulb and any fixings holding the glass in place. You might need a screwdriver for this step.

Step Three

Fill a bowl with warm, soapy water and leave the glass parts of your pendant light to soak for about 10 minutes. Whatever you do, don’t put the glass in the dishwasher. It might seem convenient, but trust us, it’s not worth the risk.

Step Four

After soaking, carefully wipe the glass inside and out with a soft cloth. If it still looks a bit greasy, apply some glass cleaner to the cloth. Now grab a soft towel to dry the glass.

Step Five

Next, clean the light bulb by wiping it with a cloth and some lukewarm water. You should be very careful not to get the metal base wet, and make sure the bulb has plenty of time to dry completely before putting it back into the fixture.

Voila! Just like that, your pendant light will look brand new. You’ll start to notice the difference immediately!
