Everyone loves pendant lights. But figuring out how to hang them can be almost as tricky as deciding which ones to buy in the first place. In this article, we reveal the top tips to achieve the perfect pendant lighting placement.
1. Finding The Right Room
The first, and probably the most important, step to getting the perfect placement for a pendant light is choosing the right room. First, figure out the right room then figure out how to add pendant light to it.
The kitchen is always the go-to favourite, as it’s the ideal spot for creating a focal point above a counter or island.
But pendant lights work perfectly in so many other rooms. With working from home now becoming more popular, many are choosing to hang a pendant light directly above their desks. Pair it with a dimmer bulb, and not only will it give you some lovely lighting, but it’ll also free up desk space, meaning you can remove that clunky old lamp. Also, pendant lights in the bedroom have become really popular too. It might seem a bit unusual, but trust us, it works. A row of small pendant lights above the headboard can make your room feel both sophisticated and cosy, giving it a warm glow.
2. Remember The Rule of Three
Balance is the key to interior design, as it’s what makes the space feel harmonious and inviting. Nothing throws a room off more than a random piece of furniture looking out of place. The same goes for pendant lights.
A design tip to create balance in your home is the infamous ‘rule of three’ trick. Visually objects in arranged odd numbers are far more appealing and impactful than those arranged in even numbers. Why? Because uneven arrangements naturally guide our eye to move around, creating a more engaging visual experience.
This rule of three is the reason why so many of our customers hang their pendant lights in groups of three as it always looks amazing.
However, if the rule of three doesn’t fit into your home, then don’t worry. Rules were made to be broken, and you can still achieve an outstanding look with one or two pendant lights.
3. Finding The Right Height Is Key
The height of your pendant can make all the difference. If you hang them too low, they’ll end up being a nuisance and blocking your view. However, hang them too high and they won’t provide enough light.
As a general rule of thumb, pendant lights should usually hang between 30 – 52cm below a standard ceiling of about 2.4m. Of course, if your ceiling is smaller or taller than 2.4m then you will need to adjust this accordingly.
4. Find That Centre Point
Finding that ‘centre’ point of the space you wish to hang your pendants in is crucial. Obviously, this depends on the size of the space and the pendant light size.
Start by measuring the length of the area where the pendants will hang. For example, if it’s over a dining table or kitchen island, grab your tape measure and get the exact length. Once you’ve got that number, divide it by four. The result tells you how far in from each end to place the centre of your pendants.
If you’re hanging three pendant lights, it’s even easier. Place one in the centre of the space, then evenly position the other two on either side. Simple, effective, and perfectly balanced!
There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to pendant lights, that’s the beauty of them. However you choose to hang them, they’ll still hold the power to absolutely transform a space. Make sure you check out our other articles about how to install hanging pendant lights.
